Young People and the London 2012 Olympic Games
The announcement in 2005 that the Olympic and Paralympic Games would be held in London in 2012 presented the chance to develop a range of creative programmes for young people in schools that would embrace the Olympic values and the learning opportunities that the Olympics brings to London. In this category you can explore a selection of Olympic themed resources documenting aspects of the Olympic programme developed by A New Direction from 2007 to 2012.

The London 2012 Olympic Games, a city-wide, international scale regeneration event, provided the opportunity to apply a high profile theme and an effective overarching focus to guide creative work in London schools.
The resources presented here offer a number of different strategic approaches to exploring a theme such as undertaking research, creating new partnership possibilities, gaining international perspectives and creating opportunities for multiple local/regional schools to work together.
Using these resources
These resources are relevant to schools and informal education establishments that are seeking new themed project ideas or wanting literacy activities using the Games as a starting point for new written work. Arts organisations and practitioners may find the resources useful for project ideas that take situations and themes as a starting point, or to gain new perspectives on working methods and strategic development in the light of new opportunities. Commissioners and cultural programmers may find the research and documentation useful that explains young people's learning outcomes and increased ownership of change through their creative exploration of the subject of the Games and regeneration. The resources make a number of observations and recommendations for practice that could be applied to other themes and regeneration projects beyond the 2012 Games.
