This paper details the process of an East London arts organisation as it developed an education programme and created links between artists and local schools in 2006.
A Live Art practitioner was commissioned by Artsadmin and Creative Partnerships London East to undertake a consultation in order to evaluate local needs, understand partnership opportunities and methods of working together, and create a strategy for working with schools.
The impact of this research was significant; in addition to shaping the programming, the participants' input was fed into the reassessment of the organisation's building facilities and organisational ethos. In this essay we can learn the important features of creating new partnerships, including ensuring space for direct and honest dialogue between all participants.
We also learn about the values of creative collaborations between teachers and artists and some of the potential barriers to embedding arts practice in schools.
