At A New Direction, we believe every child and young person should have the chance to own their creativity, shape culture, and realise their creative potential. We support cultural education leaders with the tools, insight and resources they need to make this possible.
Many of these leaders work outside traditional structures. They navigate shifting policies, funding challenges and gaps in support—developing resilience, creativity and deep community knowledge along the way. Their experiences inspired this resource.
This publication brings together three perspectives on the evolution of cultural education leadership:
- Dr David Parker explores what cultural education leadership is, why it matters, and what support the sector needs.
- John Riches shares the stories of ten practitioners whose lived experience shapes their leadership and opens pathways for others.
- Dr Chrissie Tiller connects today’s work to radical thinkers of the past, showing how their ideas can help us create new possibilities for children and young people.
This is not a fixed manual. It’s an invitation to recognise, resource and reimagine leadership for the future. We hope it sparks reflection, conversation and action.
Beyond this, we invite you to add your own voice. Share your stories with us. Challenge our thinking. Help us shape what comes next— because the future of cultural education leadership won’t be built by any one of us alone.
