Fun Palaces

On 4 October, Old Bexley CE Primary School will be hosting a Fun Palaces as part of a national movement celebrating the 100th birthday of Joan Littlewood, the director who dreamt up Fun Palaces in the 1960s. Here, Katie Salisbury tells us about the school’s plans.

If you come down to Old Bexley Church of England School, you’re in for a big surprise. Cranes, diggers and builders in hard hats have become common place at Old Bexley as we undergo major reconstruction and expansion of our school to accommodate another 210 children over the next six years. Already a three-form entry school with already over 600 pupils on roll, Old Bexley School is set to become even bigger (and better!), as we open our doors to more children and their families over the coming years. We believe that this project is a significant investment in our school which will improve the facilities and access for parents substantially.

Fun Palaces has come along at the perfect time for our school. An exciting opportunity to combine culture, art, science, music and much more to engage our local, and increasingly new, community with our school. Fun Palace events, made with and for local communities, will be taking place all over London and in venues all over the world across the weekend of the 4th October 2014. Old Bexley are excited to be the flagship primary school taking part in what will hopefully be the first of many Fun Palaces weekends to come!

For us personally, Fun Palaces is an ideal way to unveil our new school buildings and to welcome our local community, pupils past present and future and celebrate everything that makes our community special. Most importantly, as the name would suggest, we want to have fun and we want as many people as possible to help create the fun! We don’t quite know yet what our Fun Palace will contain or what it will look like, but we are excited to open up a dialogue with our pupils, and as many other people from our community as possible, about what they envisage a Fun Palace to be and how we are going to set about creating it together! We will keep you informed of our progress right here, in our Old Bexley Fun Palaces blog.
