How can disabled and non-disabled creatives grow & work together in the arts? - 11 Feb 2026

A conversation about best practice for celebrating and employing Deaf, disabled, and neurodivergent creatives.

We don’t yet live in a world that makes room for everyone, but we can see it up ahead. There are organisations, institutions and individuals who are changing the paradigm in the arts. Ava du Vernay said that if your dream only involves you, you need a bigger dream.

The work ahead for our society is to find the ways in which all voices can be heard and all people have a place at the table. In this conversation we uncover and discuss best practice as it currently stands, and speculate about what a truly inclusive future looks like.

As programmers and producers of creative opportunities for children and young people, what do we need to learn about how we can create a mutually beneficial ecosystem in the arts for all children and young people now, as well as future generations.

In this Cultural Sector Masterclass session, you will hear from:

  • BLINK Dance, producers of highly accessible multi-sensory participatory projects in diverse education and community settings
  • Ashling Foat, Participation Manager at Haringey Shed
  • Esther Miller-Myers & Erin Thorpe, National Youth Theatre

Both Haringey Shed and the National Youth Theatre took part in the Inclusive Progression Routes programme that helped create A New Direction’s Inclusive Progression Routes toolkit.

This event will give us a chance to reflect on:

  • A New Direction’s Inclusive Progression Routes toolkit.
  • What best practice is currently out there for working with D/deaf/disabled/neurodivergent creatives.
  • How we can go further to create more inclusive workplaces.

This event is particularly relevant for anyone who is:

  • Hoping to diversify their workforce.
  • Develop a more rounded, fuller and more creative arts working environment.
  • Learn so real world steps that organisations can take to ensure a more inclusive recruitment process.

This free CPD is a part of A New Direction's Cultural Sector Masterclass series for creative learning professionals to reflect upon and strengthen your practice. This session is only available online and won't be recorded.
