Cultural Sector Masterclasses are a series of workshops for creative learning professionals that explore current topics affecting children and young people programmes.
A New Direction is partnering with sector leaders to bring you exciting and relevant CPD to help you reflect on your programmes for children and young people, and strengthen your creative practice. Each session will provide space for you to test new tools and share insights with peers.
Join this masterclass workshop with creative facilitators and teachers who have worked on programmes for Barbican, Young Vic and AND's Primary Arts.
During this event host Rachel Dickinson (teacher and arts practitioner) will talk to speakers Melanie Anouf (Learning Producer, Young Vic) with Sheryl Malcolm (Theatre Practitioner) and Jordana Golbourn (INNOVATE Project Associate) who worked on Young Vic’s INNOVATE Project, Emily Williams (Education Manager, Barbican), and Ross Hunter (Programme Officer, A New Direction) along with a teacher from A New Direction’s Primary Arts programme.
Reflecting upon their recent projects: the Young Vic’s INNOVATE programme (2021-2023) and Barbican’s Creative Curriculum (2021-2023), where there was an attempt to use creativity across all curriculum and subject areas as a catalyst for change; and A New Direction’s Primary Arts Programme with particular focus on the Cultural Education Leadership Programme for teachers.
What works when artists go into schools to deliver sessions alongside teachers? What magic happens in the triangle between artist facilitators, teachers and pupils in the classroom? How can they positively affect lasting relationships between pupils and learning, pupils and teachers, and teachers and teaching? If programmes are time-bound, how can we ensure the learning from them lasts?

Host Dr. Chrissie Tiller (Creative Consultant and Practitioner), who has extensive experience in participatory and community arts projects will guide us through an online workshop on Zoom. In this two-hour event, there will be a panel discussion with our speakers with an opportunity for participants to have small group discussions and ask questions to the speakers.
You will hear from speakers Rhiannon White (Co-Artistic Director, Common Wealth) about theatre practice staged on-site within communities, Bianca A. Manu (Writer and Curator of Public Programmes, Culture&) speaking on her experience of barriers young people face in the industry and Michelle McGrath (Founder of Museum as Muck) on how they work to address structural change in the industry, and the intersectionality of social class.
