My experience of Creativity Works: Design 2016

Anna Cray, Creativity Works alumni, shares her experience of the recent programme.

When I first came across Create Jobs and their design course I was browsing for work experience to do during my gap year. I had just finished studying an Art Foundation Course in a college in Camden and was still torn on whether or not to go to university to study Digital Media. After going to the induction day I gained an insight into the work that they did and what the course had to offer. We were split into two groups and given a short creative task to work on before feeding back to the group. After the introduction to the course I was still unsure as to whether I wanted to do the course or not.

I decided to go for it and six weeks on I can say I have had a truly amazing experience. It was an intense but rewarding few weeks. I have learnt so much and the tutors have been incredibly supportive and encouraging. I have worked with people my age and it was interesting to hear about their different backgrounds. Many of the people I spoke to had already been to university.

Throughout the course I got the opportunity to work with Makerversity. Our brief was 'The Internet Of Things.' In my group of four, we designed an alarm called ‘Vibealarm’ to help encourage 18-24-year-olds people to get out of bed in the morning. We allocated separate tasks to individuals based on their skill set and what they wanted to work on. After a lesson on using CAD I was able to digitally design our product. I really enjoyed working at Makerversity because I learned a lot about idea development. I also found it interesting listening to the people who came in to talk to us about their journeys into the creative industry. They made me more inspired to be creative and have belief in myself that I can get there too.

At the graduation I showed work that I'd done during the course. I showed sketches and development work from Makerversity.

I am now planning on doing a ski season in the Alps and I am also going to spend time improving my computer skills and exploring different areas that I may like to do in the future.

Since the beginning of the course my eyes have been opened to the different pathways that design can take you. I have discovered that I have an interest in product design which I had never even considered before the course.
