Our selection of 20 arts & cultural activities for Summer 2014

With good weather on our side and hopefully plenty of sunny days, this summer promises plenty of unique opportunities for young Londoners to get involved in creative and cultural activities.

From workshops to classes and events, young people will have the chance to immerse themselves in the exciting world of arts & culture in London.

Our selection includes:

1. Music, Circus and TV

Wac Arts is offering a good (and fun) variety of activities for 9-18 year olds interested in taking part in a band, a circus or even a TV show! Click here for more information

2. Stratford on Sea

Children can enjoy a bit of sand, sing along sea shanties, listen to seaside stories and enjoy the virtual aquarium in Stratford as Discover Children's Story Centre will be hosting ‘Stratford on Sea’ all through the summer. Click here for more information

3. Poetry for young people

Immerse in the world of poetry with a day full of activities aimed at developing creativity and writing for children and young people. The day will finish with the Southbank Centre's first ever children's poetry film competition which has received entries from all over the world. Click here for more information

4. Join a youth choir

The London Youth Choir is inviting students in London to come to a short audition and get the chance to gain a place in one of their choirs. The last audition is taking place on the 21 July. Click here for more information

5. Roundhouse summer projects

How does writing songs with artists who’ve helped Kylie have hits sound? Or designing video games? Or joining a team to produce, compose and perform in the Roundhouse Summer Show? And that’s only for starters – the Roundhouse has over 25 different training and showcasing opportunities for 11-25s to get involved in this July and August, and bursaries are available to cover costs if needed. 6. Girl factor

A series of workshops that take place every Tuesday evening in Deptford. Girls who take part will develop a creative mix of drama, lyrics and leadership skills. You can join at any time. ​Read more

7. ARTBASH Camp – Dreamers

How does a whole week full of arty-fun sound to you? If this sounds exciting, join a group of young artists and develop your creative skills through a programme of imaginative workshops. Click here for more information

8. Performance opportunity

Source is a free outdoor show that will be springing up across London this summer. Renowned outdoor arts company Emergency Exit Arts is working in partnership with Cirque Bijou, Nutkhut and artsdepot to provide an exciting performance training opportunity for up to 20 young people aged 13 - 19. 9. Music and Drama summer school

The Guildhall School of Music & Drama is offering a wide range of classes and workshops in acting and music. The options are quite broad in both art forms. Click here and also here for more information

10. Short summer courses at Mountview

One of the UK’s leading drama schools is offering a great range of summer courses for young people aged 9 to 16 years old. These week-long courses will help you develop acting, singing and dance skills through fun and dynamic workshops and performances. Click here for more information


11. Rambert summer schools 2014

Places are still available for the Young Movers course which provides a fantastic opportunity to learn original Rambert repertoire and develop both technical and creative skills. If you don’t live in London, don’t worry there will be courses taking place in Manchester and Conwy. Click here for more information

12. Into films and creativity?

The Young Film Academy is offering a wide range of filmmaking courses for young people all over London. Whether you live in South, West or North, the academy has plenty of options available including the Four-Day Film school and Make a film in a day. Click here for more information

13. Summer Holiday Family Days

Between mid-July and September, Camden Arts Centre is inviting families with children to come together and join a series of different creative activities. No booking is required. Click here and also here for more information.

14. Creative arts and music in Lambeth

The South East borough will have available a series of workshops, classes and events for young people interested in arts, dance, music, filmmaking and other art & cultural activities. Click here for more information

15. Crossing Borders

The Grand Union Youth Orchestra (GUYO) and Rich Mix Youth Takeover will hold a vibrant day of cross-cultural music making. The event is free and it’s open to young musicians aged 12-21.

GUYO also has a summer programme full of workshops and performances. If you are a young musician, this is your chance to join London’s pioneering world music and jazz ensemble.

16. The Art Academy

If you are interested in short courses, The Art Academy will open their studios this summer for different disciplines including: painting, drawing, sculpture, glass, jewellery and ceramics. They offer introductory courses for the beginner and masterclasses for the more experienced. This is a great opportunity if you have a passion for art. Click here for more information

17. Summer Reading Challenge 2014

This is a great opportunity to make the most of summer and reading. Sign up at your local library, read six library books of your choice, collect stickers and other rewards along the way – all free. Exciting, isn’t? Click here for more information

18. I am your neighbour

An exciting week-long festival of events in venues across Brixton, presented by Ovalhouse's Truth about Youth project. The festival will bring together communities to celebrate the artistic works of young people in south London. It will include spoken word evenings, community art workshops, dancing in the street, plays inside people’s houses and much more. Click here for more information

19. Summer Festival in Bethnal Green

The Museum of Childhood grounds will be buzzing with live music, dance, walkabout acts, art and craft activities, designer stalls, food, face painting, rickshaw rides and games. Click here for more information

20. Watermans youth arts summer festival

URBAN AMBUSH is back for a second year with a range of exciting activities aimed at 8-18 year olds. Young people can make music and perform plays in the theatre; create Street Art and Parkour performances in the car-park; build sculptures on the terrace; learn digital game design and light digital graffiti.
